DEEWR began the Australian UMAP Student Exchange Program in 1993 in response to the establishment of the regional UMAP Exchange Program following discussions between representatives of higher education in Asia in 1991-93. The Department has invited Australian higher education institutions to submit applications for funding under the Program annually since 1993.

The Australian UMAP Student Exchange Program provides funding to Australian higher education institutions to subsidise the cost of their establishing and monitoring, and of Australian students’ participation in, UMAP student exchanges with counterpart higher education institutions in the Asia Pacific Region.
Supported students are required to study full-time and for at least one semester and a maximum of two semesters in a counterpart institution under institution-to-institution student exchange arrangements.
Eligible student exchanges include provision for tuition fee waiver and credit transfer. Australian higher education institutions receive A$5,000 per student (excluding GST) to subsidise the cost of the student’s participation in an eligible student exchange.
