2010 ENDEAVOUR LANGUAGE TEACHER FELLOWSHIPS (Practising Languages Teachers)

The Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowships (ELTF) program for practising languages teachers in 2010 comprises 8 in-country (overseas) programs and an onshore Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) immersion program held in Darwin, Australia. Costs covered by the ELTF program include domestic and international air travel (where applicable), mid-range twin-share accommodation and/or home stays, some meals, language tuition fees and excursions costs.

For 2010, ELTF Awards will be offered to teachers of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish to participate in in-country study programs in Jordan, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea and Spain  respectively.

While specific arrangements may vary across study programs, each study program will include three weeks of intensive language and cultural study. The language study component of the program will focus primarily on improving Awardees’ proficiency in the language, rather than teaching methodologies.

In-country program Awardees will also have the opportunity to visit a variety of sites, make local contacts where possible and be exposed to contemporary life, as well as to immerse themselves in the language through day-to-day interactions.

The Bahasa Indonesia program will be delivered in Darwin, Northern Territory, at the  Charles Darwin University. Successful applicants will be provided with full details in October 2009. This program will comprise a three-week residential intensive language study and cultural program.

The Bahasa Indonesia program will focus on strengthening language proficiency with opportunity to explore teaching methodology for Indonesian language programs in Australian schools. Indonesian language specialists, including native language speaking tutors from Indonesia, will be integral to the program and Awardees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language through a range of activities.

Awardees can expect cultural activities and structured opportunities to interact with Indonesian native speakers as a regular feature of the Bahasa Indonesia study program. Awardees will also have the opportunity to access realia from Indonesia (eg posters, audio/visual resources, etc) for use in their classrooms.

Should an in-country overseas ELTF Bahasa Indonesia program be offered by DEEWR in the future, Awardees in this Bahasa Indonesia program held in Australia will be allowed to apply.
