A Masters Degree takes either one or two years after completion of a Bachelor Degree.

1 to 2 years

Doctoral Degree (PhD)

The Doctoral Degree is the highest qualification offered by Australian universities. Although it is a research degree, some programs may have a course work component. There are three components to a Doctoral Degree:

1. a review of the literature, experimentation or other systemic approach to a body of knowledge

2. an original research project resulting in a significant contribution to knowledge and understanding and/or the application of knowledge within a discipline or field of study

3. a substantial and well-ordered thesis, demonstrating the relationship of the research to the broader framework of the discipline or field of study.

Typically 3 years

Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications

Vocational Education & Training provides occupational or work-related knowledge and skills. VET courses are traditionally non-academic and directly relate to the trade, occupation or ‘vocation’ of the applicant. VET courses exclude degree and higher level programs normally delivered by universities.

No. Applicants must include a confirmation of affiliation with their host organisation or admission to their host institution with their application by the closing date.

We found that applicants who commenced preparation for their application early were able to obtain confirmed affiliation or admission by the closing date.

Please find a letter at the back of the Applicant Guidelines you can use to notify your host institution that you are applying for the 2010 round of the Endeavour Awards and require an admission letter (letter of offer) before 31 July 2009.

If you cannot meet this eligibility requirement please consider applying for future Endeavour Award rounds and using the extra time to prepare your documentation.

If you are applying for admission to an Australian institution ensure you go to the institution’s international webpage, as applications for admission tend to open earlier for international students than for domestic students.

International applicants are not required to undergo a police check but must satisfy the requirements for the issue of an appropriate entry visa to Australia.

I am an Australian postgraduate student in receipt of an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). What is the implication if I receive an Endeavour Research Fellowship?

Students are required to suspend their APA if the Endeavour Research Fellowship provides a benefit greater than 75 per cent of the APA stipend rate. Income earned from sources unrelated to the course of study is not subject to the 75 per cent rule. The duration of the APA is not reduced by any periods of study undertaken overseas, for the degree, under an Endeavour Award. This allows students granted an international research scholarship, such as the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research Fellowship, to resume their APA on return from overseas, for the remainder of the APA’s full duration. Students should contact the administrator of the APA at their home institution for further information.

I am an Australian postdoctoral research student in receipt of an Australian Research Council (ARC) grant. What is the implication if I receive an Endeavour Research Fellowship?

  • Rental bonds
  • Text books
  • Study materials
  • Host organisation/institution’s infrastructure expenses. For example, computer or software expenses
  • Home contents insurance
  • Overseas health insurance
  • Additional medical insurance to cover ancillary medical services.

Is the funding paid under an Endeavour Award Taxable?

No. Endeavour Research Fellowships and Endeavour Executive Awards are now tax exempt. Award Holders enrolled at an Australian institution are not liable to pay tax on their Endeavour Award funding.

Apart from deciding the organisation/institution that best meets the needs of my proposed program, are there any other factors I should consider before choosing my destination?

Yes. You should investigate and obtain information about the city in which you will live and make sure that it has adequate facilities for your individual needs.

How can Australian undergraduate students apply for the Endeavour International Student Exchange Programs?

The Endeavour International Student Exchange Programs are funded under the Endeavour umbrella and are aimed at undergraduate students only. Australian undergraduate students wishing to undertake an exchange under these programs need to enquire at the International Office or the Faculty of the higher education institution of their home institution. While Australian universities obtain funding support from the Australian Government, it is the universities that decide on the exchange projects that are of interest to them (including countries, counterpart institutions, courses, selection of students, etc).

How can international undergraduate students apply for the Endeavour International Student Exchange Programs?

International undergraduate students who wish to undertake an exchange under the Endeavour International Student Exchange Programs  need to enquire at the International Office of their home institution. Students need to check:

  • if their home institution has a student exchange agreement with an Australian university
  • if yes, is the agreement made in relation to the Endeavour International Student Exchange Programs
  • if yes, does the Australian university have any funding available under the Endeavour International Student Exchange Programs

I understand the Endeavour Executive Awards provide professional development opportunities to high achievers; what is meant by “professional development”?

The Endeavour Executive Award enables high achievers working in professional fields (such as business, industry, education or government) to gain experience in an associated field in a host institution or organisation of a participating country.

The Endeavour Executive Award provides opportunities for Award Holders to develop or upgrade their professional skills and knowledge. The Endeavour Executive Award focuses on building skills and knowledge through a host work environment rather than through a formal study program.

The format of the professional development program will vary for each Endeavour Executive Award Holder. Examples of professional development activities include study tours, workshop participation, attendance at conferences, internships, residencies, mentoring, management training and peer-to-peer learning.

What is the difference between my home or host institution or organisation?

Home institution or organisation is the university, school or workplace that you attend in your home country.

Host institution or organisation is the university, school or workplace where you will be going to undertake your Award.

Who owns the Intellectual Property of my research program?

Intellectual Property (IP) rights will depend on the policy of the host organisation, any IP laws of the home country and any agreement which may have been negotiated between the Award Holder and the host organisation.

The Australian Government does not require or request copies of any research material, and does not wish to maintain any IP rights. If the Australian Government does procure copies of this material and uses it in some way, it must have a license to do so. This would be negotiated in a license agreement between the owner of the IP rights, i.e. the student or the host organisation and the Australian Government. In addition, wherever any work is reproduced, the creator of the work must be identified.
