The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced that four outstanding Indigenous scholars have been awarded Fellowships to carry out research at leading universities and research institutions in the Asia-Pacific in 2007.

During an address at Australia House in London today, the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, announced the Australian Government’s $2 million endowment for the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust scholarship programme.

Australia will double the number of educational scholarships it offers in the Asia-Pacific region. The new program, to be called Australian Scholarships, will provide nearly $1.4 billion in funding over five years for more than 19,000 scholarships.

Sixty-eight Australian undergraduate students will live and study in Asia in 2006, while the same number of Asian students will come to Australia, following the awarding of 136 student scholarships by the Australian Government and the Cheung Kong Group.
